The ‘hottest’ pub for
miles!
We had barely settled into the pub and begun to bring it up
to our standards when it was disastrously gutted by fire and
reduced to a shell. Given the long history of the pub, dating
back to the 17th century, we were determined to restore it to
its former glory, and more! Using old photographs and drawings,
many of them supplied through the generosity of local people,
we restored the main building to its original size and structure,
including the internal period features and original slate roof,
and took the opportunity to recreate other parts of the pub
that had been altered over the years.
Traditional style with modern convenience
The refurbishment has been an impressive success, with customers
astonished to find the bar almost identical to how it was before
the fire! But in addition to restoring the period features,
we’ve added double glazing and finished the kitchens and accommodation
to an exceptionally high standard. Using modern furniture with
traditional themes, we’ve created a warm, friendly ambience
with all modern conveniences. |

Nigel and Rowena
This is our first pub and we looked long and hard before
finding it. Rowena is Dutch, Nigel English, and we met while Nigel
was working in The Netherlands. Our dream was to find a country
pub with that indefinable ‘English’ atmosphere: a pub that was
part of the local community; but also a place that people would
want to visit from all over the world. We found it at The Bickford
Arms, and we strive continually to maintain that friendly and
welcoming community atmosphere. In restoring The Bickford Arms
we paid attention to the little details as well as the big picture,
working hard to create a pub that stood out from the mainstream.
And we’ve passed our values on to our staff, ensuring that customers
get the best possible service and attention. |
